Good news from Canada

The Canadian Supreme Court turned around the libel laws that give greater weight to press freedom.

Canada’s Free Press

It’s nice to know that more countries are taking on the idea of greater press freedom in libel cases.

I still remember how shocked I was when I discovered that truth is not an absolute defense in a libel case in Hong Kong. There were cases where the organization that felt slighted (libeled?) by a news organization would still win a libel case even though everything said was true. It was explained to me that even if one person viewed the group in a lesser light because of the honest report, that group (or person) can successfully sue for libel.
